Postal Addressing System
Postal Addressing System
The Ministry of Communication and Technology of Somaliland is responsible for developing and implementing policies that accelerate the growth of telecommunications and technology services throughout the country.
Currently, Somaliland does not have a formal national addressing, postal, or mail delivery system. As a result, there has been limited capacity for accurate property identification, parcel delivery, and location-based public services.
In partnership with Geosol, a leading technology and GIS service provider, the Ministry is proud to introduce the first modern Postal Addressing System in Somaliland’s history.
The new addressing system will enable residents to identify their district, street name, house number, and ZIP code, making it easier to send and receive national and international parcels, mail, and delivery services efficiently.
Furthermore, the initiative is expected to create new economic opportunities through the expansion of delivery services, postal operations, logistics, and E-Commerce businesses, contributing to national development and job creation.
The Ministry is delighted to announce that this innovative service is now available in the capital city of Hargeisa. Land and property owners are encouraged to register their properties through the Hargeisa Local Authority in order to obtain a unique house or building address and secure property ownership documentation (Mulkiyad).
Classification of Streets
The following are the official classifications of roads within Hargeisa’s addressing system:
Main Roads
Main Roads are major transportation routes with greater width and length within the road network system. Roads with a minimum width of 20 meters (ROW) and a length of at least 2 kilometers are classified as Main Roads.
Avenues
Avenues are horizontal roads running from east to west. These roads primarily connect major roads and streets within the city.
Streets
Streets are vertical roads running from north to south. They serve as connectors between major roads and avenues.
Lanes
Lanes are narrower roads designed to connect streets and avenues within residential and commercial areas.
Loops
Loops are circular roads designed to improve accessibility and traffic circulation within neighborhoods and urban developments.
